In this article, we’ll continue to explore more interesting and innovative software companies that offer varied employment opportunities to new Immigrants in the Province of Ontario, Canada.

If you’ve missed reading the first and second part of this series, then you can still get hold of it over here:

SHOPIFY- Ottawa, Ontario

Shopify Canada

Shopify Inc. is a multinational e-commerce company based in Ottawa, Ontario. The name also refers to the company’s proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify is a platform that provides payment, marketing, shipping and engagement services to online retailers.

What’s new at Shopify?

  • Shopify has had one of the best rallies of the year as companies look to increase their e-commerce capabilities to offset plummeting retail sales caused by the Coronavirus pandemic that has shut down stores and forced people to stay home. The company’s shares have soared 65 % in the last month, outpacing another investor darling, Zoom, which has been hampered by privacy and security concerns.
  • According to market capitalization, Shopify is now Canada’s second-largest company, valued at more than $100 billion. It has grown to overtake Canadian banks except for one: Royal Bank of Canada. Additionally, it has more than twice the market cap of eBay and far outpaces Farfetch and Etsy in terms of e-commerce.
  • Shopify also launched Shopify Capital, extending loans to merchants in the US, in 2016. Recently, the program was extended to small and medium-sized businesses in Canada affected by the pandemic.

The Culture At Shopify

Propelled by ambition

As Shopify grows rapidly, it shows no signs of slowing down. Their goal is to redefine entrepreneurship, become a global accelerator of commerce, and be a hundred-year company.

People first

Shopify values its employees. They provide benefits to help people and their families stay healthy and provide self-directed learning budgets to support learning and growth.

Shopify-Canada has found two very useful tools to motivate its workforce: an empowerment-based job design and a reward system that aligns employee reward with company performance.

Scale for impact

More than 1 million merchants all over the world use Shopify’s products. A project handled by Shopify will have a direct impact on merchants’ livelihoods, and make their work very fulfilling.

Autonomy rules

Freedom to create your path creates magic. Employees at the company are trusted to be resourceful, solve problems as they arise, and define how they want to make a difference.

Conformity kills creativity

A diverse workforce is essential to building great products, as well as maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture. By valuing all perspectives and eliminating roadblocks, the company maximizes its collective impact.

Learn from the best

Shopify attracts talented individuals since it provides the tools employees need to feel challenged, hone their skills, and share knowledge. During the company’s growth, Shopify fosters a culture of trust and autonomy among employees. The company is humble about what it knows and what it does not. They look for people who will promote this mindset with their peers and managers.

The Job Application Process

Apply

The candidate is expected to identify 1–2 roles that fit their career goals and experience. Before applying, be sure to check the requirements as each role may have different requirements.

Initial call

A recruiter or hiring manager from Shopify may set up a 15- to 30-minute phone or virtual interview with a candidate during which the candidate can ask questions and tell them what they are interested in. This process furthermore helps candidates explore other roles that might be a better match for their skill set.

The Life Story

Candidates are recruited in a conversational style for one hour. Candidates should think about the experiences that shaped them to the point they are at now as a means of preparing for this round.

From the more introverted folks at Shopify: this part can be as personal as a candidate wants it to be. Candidates must get technical if that’s where the passion lies.

Meet the team

Candidates will meet up to five potential co-workers for an hour each. They may be asked how they would solve a “specific” problem and explain it to the team, depending on the role.

The interview

The hiring team will take some time before getting back to the candidates. Final decisions will be made based on feedback from Shopify team members of all levels of seniority, experience, and perspective.

Candidates can apply for 3 applications within 30 days. The recruiters and coordinators will be supporting the candidates throughout the process. Candidates can ask them questions about what to expect, who they will meet, and more.

The hiring process will vary depending on the role and number of applicants. Anything which makes the candidates comfortable can be worn by them. Candidates have the freedom to re-apply if they intend to.

If re-applying for the same role, it’s recommended to first gain some additional experience. For engineering roles, one is expected to wait for at least 6–12 months before applying again.

If a candidate needs the accommodation while interviewing, they could let the recruiter know or they could contact accommodations@shopify.com for further details.
